This policy explains what information this website collects, why it is collected, and what happens to it. It is written to describe how the site actually works rather than to cover every possibility in the abstract. If anything here is unclear, please ask, the contact details are at the bottom.
Who runs this website
This site belongs to Tanya Barrans, a licensed real estate broker in Washington State, brokered by John L Scott Real Estate. Each John L Scott office is independently owned and operated. Tanya is responsible for the information collected here.
What this site collects, and when
When you send a message through the contact form
The contact form asks for your name and email address, and optionally your phone number, what you are thinking about, your timing, how you prefer to be contacted, and anything you would like Tanya to know. All of it is voluntary apart from your name and email, which are needed in order to reply.
What you send is stored in Follow Up Boss, the client management system Tanya uses to keep track of conversations. It is used to answer your enquiry and to follow up about it. Nothing you send through this form is added to a marketing mailing list unless you separately sign up for the newsletter.
When you sign up for the newsletter
The newsletter form asks for your email address and, optionally, your first name. These are stored in Hostinger Reach, the email service used to send the newsletter, and are used only to send it. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.
Guide and checklist downloads that ask for your email address, such as the Moving to Renton downloads, are also handled by Hostinger Reach: your address is added to the same list and the file is emailed to you. Unsubscribe links work the same way. Some guides and checklists, such as the Renton Neighborhood Guide and the 60-Day Home Selling Plan, can be downloaded without giving an email address.
When you leave a comment
Journal articles have a comment form. If you leave a comment, your name, email address and the comment are stored on this site so it can be reviewed before it appears. Your email address is not shown publicly.
When you simply browse
This site uses Google Analytics to understand how the site is used in aggregate, which pages are read, roughly where visitors come from, and whether anything is broken. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects information such as your approximate location, device and browser, and the pages you visit. It is used to improve the site, not to identify you personally.
You can opt out of Google Analytics entirely by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser settings. The site works normally either way.
When you first visit, a banner lets you accept, reject or choose which cookies are used. You can change your choice at any time with the Preferences button on the banner, or by blocking cookies in your browser settings.
Like almost all websites, the web server also keeps standard technical logs, IP address, browser type, and the time of each request, which are used for security and troubleshooting.
When you use tools and content from other companies
Several things on this site are provided by other companies, and using them means dealing with those companies directly as well, under their own privacy policies:
- Homebot. The home value and buying power tools on the Buying and Selling pages are provided by Homebot. Anything you enter into those tools goes to Homebot.
- Google Calendar scheduling. Booking a conversation with Tanya uses a Google scheduling page. What you enter there is processed by Google.
- Google reviews. The reviews on the home page are loaded from Google through a reviews widget (Trustindex). Loading them may share your IP address and browser details with that provider and with Google.
- Videos, maps and social posts. Some pages embed YouTube videos, Instagram or TikTok posts, or a Google map. These load from those companies and may set their own cookies once you view or play them.
- Share buttons. Journal articles carry share buttons (AddToAny) that let you send an article to services such as Facebook or LinkedIn. Using one sends the article address to that service.
Who your information is shared with
Your information is never sold, rented, or traded.
It is shared only with the service providers that make the site work, Follow Up Boss, Hostinger Reach, Google (Analytics, reviews and scheduling), Homebot, and the company hosting the website, and only so they can perform that service. It may also be shared where the law requires it, or with a lender, title company, inspector, or brokerage staff when that is a necessary part of a transaction you have asked Tanya to help with.
How long it is kept
Enquiries and client records are kept for as long as needed to work with you and afterwards for as long as real estate record-keeping rules require. Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. You may ask for your information to be deleted at any time, and it will be unless a law or a records requirement means it has to be kept.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter using the link in any email.
- Ask what information is held about you, or ask for it to be corrected or deleted, by emailing Tanya.
- Ask to stop being contacted at any time.
- Turn off analytics cookies using the opt-out link above or your browser settings.
Requests are honored regardless of where you live. There is no need to explain why you are asking.
Security
The site is served over an encrypted connection, and form submissions are sent to the systems above over encrypted connections. No website can promise perfect security, but access to the systems holding your information is limited to Tanya and the people who need it to help with your enquiry.
Children
This site is meant for adults and is not directed at children under 13. If a child has sent information through the site, please get in touch and it will be deleted.
Changes to this policy
If the site starts collecting something new, or starts using a new service, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change.
