Meet Erika Cooper Deaton, Instructor at Euro Institute of Skin Care in Renton, WA!

A Hidden Gem in Fairwood, Renton

I am beyond excited to shine a spotlight on a true hidden gem in our community—the Euro Institute of Skin Care. For over two decades, I've driven past this institute, always wondering what secrets it held within its walls. Today, I have the pleasure of delving into the wonders of the Euro Institute and sharing my discoveries with all of you.

As I sit down for an interview with Erika Cooper Deaton, an instructor and master esthetician at the Euro Institute, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation. Erika is not only an expert in her field but also the owner of Juno Aesthetics. Her wealth of knowledge and experience makes her the perfect guide to showcase the magic of the Euro Institute.

I'm intrigued to know more about Erika's journey at the Euro Institute, so I dive right into that topic. Erika shares that she first joined the Euro Institute as a student, following a spontaneous decision during a break from her previous career. Her love for skincare led her to enroll at the Euro Institute, and little did she know that this decision would shape her life. Falling in love with the school, Erika eventually became an instructor. She reveals that this pattern of students never wanting to leave is quite common at the Euro Institute, and they are always welcomed back with open arms.

Naturally, I'm curious about the number of students at the Euro Institute, so I ask Erika for some insights. She explains that the number can vary depending on the time of year and the level of interest and enrollment. Currently, her class consists of 18 students, but it can range from 10 to 20. Smaller class sizes are a priority at the Euro Institute to ensure personalized instruction and a positive learning environment.

Services Offered and Student Training

One aspect that sets the Euro Institute apart is its holistic approach to skincare education. Erika emphasizes the institute's focus on hands-on experience and a well-rounded curriculum. In addition to academic instruction, students learn about skin function, maintaining skin health, and understanding skincare ingredients. The Euro Institute operates as a working spa, providing students with invaluable real-world experience.

As we delve into the services available at the Euro Institute, I'm eager to know what treatments community members can expect. Erica explains that while the Euro Institute specializes in aesthetics, they don't offer massage services as it requires a separate license. However, community members can enjoy a range of services, including waxing and various types of facials. The European facials at the Euro Institute are particularly enticing, as they incorporate facial massages for relaxation purposes. Erica mentions the use of tools like the high-frequency wand, which can be added to the facials at no extra cost. This wand harnesses thermal energy to warm the skin, providing relaxation and aiding in treating acne or breakouts. Additionally, the Euro Institute incorporates vibrational therapy called Acutonics, which targets different skin challenges using color and specific pressure points on the face.

One of the most intriguing traditions at the Euro Institute involves the students' initial experiences with clients, who are none other than their friends and family. To ensure a supportive environment for the students, the Euro Institute holds a special friends and family day. Before they progress to advanced services like chemical peels and nano needling, students receive comprehensive education and training. Instructors closely supervise and guide students during these procedures to ensure their competence and safety.

Community Involvement and Support

Expressing her appreciation for the Renton community, Erika highlights the overwhelming support the Euro Institute receives from community members who visit for services. She recognizes the invaluable experience students gain by working with clients and emphasizes the Euro Institute's commitment to giving back to the community. They collaborate with local organizations like Vision House and actively participate in community events such as the Renton Chamber of Commerce's auctions.

I can't help but marvel at the supportive nature of the Renton community, where people genuinely root for each other's success. Erika confirms this sentiment, stating that the Euro Institute instills the value of community over competition in their students. This value perfectly aligns with the supportive atmosphere they have witnessed in the Renton community.

Renton Favorites

Curiosity piqued, I inquire about Erika's connection to Renton. As it turns out, she has been living in Renton for approximately eight years, making her a proud Renton resident. Naturally, I can't resist asking for recommendations on local dining spots. Erika enthusiastically recommends Blossom, a vegan restaurant in downtown Renton. The Euro Institute frequently visits this establishment, drawn not only by its delicious food but also by its alignment with their values of nutrition and skincare. Another favorite of Erika's is Mariana's, a place she enjoys for special occasions with her family.

Keen on exploring the local businesses in Renton, I inquire about Erika's favorite local shop. With a warm smile, she mentions 4 Sisters, located in downtown Renton. This charming shop offers fresh herbs and teas, which are integral to skincare and can be used for homemade remedies. Erika expresses her appreciation for the helpful and knowledgeable staff at 4 Sisters, especially the owner, Jen, who has always welcomed the Euro Institute with open arms.

Joining the Euro Institute and Supporting the Community

Before wrapping up the interview, I'm eager to know how community members can join the Euro Institute and support their endeavors. Erika encourages anyone interested in attending the Euro Institute to schedule a tour and explore their options. Today, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Frank Castro and Shaunn Siekawitch, the passionate owners of Bickersons Brewhouse. Join me as we dive into their journey of turning their love for brewing into a thriving local business right here in the Renton Highlands.

The Birth of Bickersons Brewhouse

In 2017, shortly after moving to the Highlands, Frank Castro found himself facing a life-altering challenge: a cancer diagnosis. To cope with the difficult times and distract himself from the treatment process, Frank sought solace in a new hobby – homebrewing. Guided by a friend's expertise, he started brewing beer and honing his skills. Shaunn Siekawitch, Frank's partner, fondly remembers carboys fermenting in unexpected corners of their home as they embarked on this beer-making adventure.

As Frank's brewing improved, they realized they had stumbled upon something remarkable. Combining Frank's background in analytics with the invaluable advice from industry insiders, they saw the potential to transform their passion into a business. The pivotal moment came when a former Starbucks location, conveniently situated across the street from their home, became available for lease. Seizing the opportunity, they submitted a bid and embarked on a 14-month journey to bring Bickersons Brewhouse to life.

The Meaning behind the Name

The name "Bickersons" may evoke curiosity, and rightfully so. Frank and Shaunn's witty banter as a couple inspired the name, reflecting their playfully spirited dynamic. It's an endearing way of embracing their occasional bickering and inviting customers to enjoy their craft beer while soaking in the friendly atmosphere. As you spend time at the brewhouse, you'll undoubtedly witness their light-hearted exchanges and feel like part of their extended family.

Always Evolving

With a commitment to continuous improvement, Frank acknowledges that perfection is an elusive goal. While some beers come close to his standards, he always finds room for enhancement. Valuing customer feedback, Frank and Shaunn remain receptive to their patrons' preferences. The brewing community has been a source of invaluable support and guidance, fostering an environment where brewers readily share their knowledge and collaborate.

A Journey Fueled by Passion and Resilience

When asked whether brewing beer helped him through his cancer journey, Frank shared that it provided him with a sense of purpose and a much-needed distraction. While going through treatment, brewing became an outlet for his energy and creativity. Frank's dedication to the craft extended beyond his day job, allowing him to focus on the fermentation and brewing processes during evenings and weekends. As the quality of their beers improved, so did Frank's determination to refine and experiment further.

Community Support

The Renton community has been instrumental in the success of Bickersons Brewhouse. From the very beginning, locals rallied behind this new brewery in the Highlands. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the community stood by them, recognizing the importance of supporting a local establishment. Bickersons Brewhouse has become a beloved gathering spot where neighbors can enjoy good beer, warm company, and the vibrant atmosphere of their community.

Engaging the Community

Bickersons Brewhouse goes beyond serving delicious craft beer. They actively engage with the community through events and partnerships. Every Thursday, they host trivia nights, providing a fun and interactive experience for customers. They have also formed a partnership with local food vendors, allowing customers to pair their favorite brews with delectable dishes from neighboring businesses. This collaboration not only supports local entrepreneurs but also enhances the overall experience for visitors to Bickersons Brewhouse.

Furthermore, Frank and Shaunn are dedicated to giving back to the community that has embraced their business.

Final Thoughts

Bickersons Brewhouse is more than just a brewpub; it's a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and community support. Frank and Shaunn's journey, born out of a hobby and nurtured by resilience, has resulted in a beloved establishment that brings people together, one sip at a time. So, whether you're a beer enthusiast, a supporter of local businesses, or simply seeking a warm and friendly spot to relax, Bickersons Brewhouse welcomes you with open arms and a frosty pint.

Meet Steve Randolph and Hannah Flory, Leaders of Sustainable Renton!

Building a Thriving Community Through Food Security and Environmental Sustainability

Let's delve into the inspiring initiatives of Sustainable Renton. Join us as we explore how this remarkable organization is creating a lasting impact by promoting food security and environmental sustainability in our community. Discover how Sustainable Renton's innovative projects and passionate efforts are paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

The Beginning: A Vision for Sustainability

In 2010, Sustainable Renton was born out of a shared passion for sustainable practices and a deep concern for the lack of community support in Renton. The founding members embarked on this journey driven by their like-minded tendencies and a desire to make a difference.

At that time, the community faced numerous challenges, including food deserts where access to affordable, high-quality vegetables and produce was limited. Even then, the market proved to be a harsh reality for hardworking individuals who struggled to make ends meet despite holding multiple jobs. Recognizing the urgent need for change, Steve and Hannah believed that education could be a catalyst for progress.

Their first step was to organize seminars and meaningful movie screenings, designed to empower and educate the community. These initiatives aimed to shed light on sustainable practices and inspire people to take action. The success of these events encouraged them to consider reviving the educational aspect, such as bringing back the popular meaningful movies program.

Steve Randolph (the current President of the organization) and his wife were among the founding members of Sustainable Renton. Their personal commitment and dedication to the cause drove them to establish a community garden behind Celebration Church in the Highlands. This garden served as a platform to bring the community together, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for sustainable living. Additionally, they played a pivotal role in assisting the North Community Highlands Center in setting up raised beds, expanding the availability of gardening resources.

As the momentum grew, Sustainable Renton expanded its reach and collaborated with other organizations to promote food justice. Together with the Don Edmonds community, they established a garden and provided valuable support in setting up the necessary infrastructure. Their expertise attracted knowledgeable individuals who shared their passion for sustainability.

By 2019, Sustainable Renton had reached a significant milestone with the introduction of the Free Grocery Store. This innovative concept aimed to tackle food insecurity by providing free groceries to those in need. The establishment of this store marked a significant turning point in the organization's history.

Addressing Food Insecurity: The Free Grocery Store

The roots of the Free Grocery Store stretch back to 2019 when the concept took off. Little did they know that the following year would bring a global pandemic that would reshape the lives of millions. As COVID-19 took hold, grocers, food providers, and restaurants found themselves with surplus food that would have otherwise gone to waste. Sensing an opportunity to bridge the gap between excess food and those in need, Sustainable Renton sprang into action.

Scott, their lead Gleaner, tirelessly roamed the city, salvaging thousands of pounds of food. And with that, the first parking lot free grocery store was born. The urgency to get this food into the hands of people who had lost their jobs, faced layoffs, or found themselves without access to nourishment became their mission. Hannah passionately describes this as "food sovereignty," the notion that everyone deserves culturally relevant, affordable food that is both nutritious and satisfying. No longer should individuals be restricted to mere cans of beans and boxes of rice from food banks. Sustainable Renton sought to provide a diverse selection of food that would otherwise have been discarded.

255176004_4756598361045933_6894914967237263269_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=e3f864&_nc_eui2=AeHcSesZ0brg4iVj9Dqpf1gRFMklwAkNYGoUySXACQ1galAHgH4Guy8sMaTX3eAIP49RsqPwv7LwEB73Vn_1YabY&_nc_ohc=FVhyhfSfBpcAX-8xr1F&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent.fceb6-1.fna&oh=00_AfBeY-EgNznQvK0MT2AZCoWm7DGppXTaMZ_IO8Kv4Mnx9Q&oe=647FA92D

The magnitude of food waste is a staggering reality that Sustainable Renton confronts head-on. Recent reports from NPR shed light on Food Waste Prevention Week, revealing that one-third of Washington's landfill content is food. Can you imagine? Approximately 400,000 pounds of edible food are discarded every year in the state alone. This revelation underscores the pressing need for organizations like Sustainable Renton, which tackle this issue while simultaneously fostering a sustainable ecosystem.

What sets Sustainable Renton apart is their commitment to inclusivity and sustainability. As a secular organization, they ensure a low barrier of entry, eliminating the need for intrusive questions that might discourage individuals seeking assistance. Their Free Grocery Store operates on a simple premise: to provide sustenance to those who need it, no questions asked. By rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, they create a virtuous cycle that prevents unnecessary waste and ensures a more sustainable future.

Every Monday, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, the doors of the Free Grocery Store swing open at Saint Matthews Lutheran Church, welcoming individuals from all walks of life. This regular event is a testament to Sustainable Renton's unwavering commitment to addressing food insecurity and empowering the community.

Gleaning and Food Rescue: A Lifeline for the Community

34

When asked about the current state of their food supply, Hannah Flory responded, "We'll always take more food. This is a dry period for us. We don't have produce coming in from the farms. We've got some spring vegetables coming in now, but we will basically hand it out until the last car comes through." It was evident that every contribution of food was valuable and no amount was too small. The organization gladly accepts any surplus provisions and ensures they reach those in need.

Sustainable Renton goes above and beyond by redistributing any excess food to various local institutions. "Anything extra that's left over on Mondays, we move to the tiny home villages," explained Hannah. She and Scott personally deliver these donations to five different tiny home villages. Additionally, they collaborate with the Senior Activity Center for their lunch program and support other feeding programs. The scale of their food redistribution efforts is truly remarkable.

Steve Randolph emphasized the magnitude of their impact, saying, "A huge amount of food. We have never had a car come through that we haven't given food to of some level. It may not be everything they wanted, but we've always had something to give them." This unwavering commitment to providing sustenance to those in need sets Sustainable Renton apart. The organization ensures that any surplus food finds its way to the places where it is most urgently required, leaving no one hungry.

During the interview, the concept of gleaning emerged as a central theme. Tanya Barrans inquired about its meaning, to which Hannah Flory responded, "Gleaning basically just means, we're going to get the food wherever it's at." Gleaning encompasses the act of collecting food from various sources, whether it's grocery stores, food banks with surplus supplies, or the newly established food donation bins in local businesses. Sustainable Renton's objective is clear: to gather as much food as possible and ensure it reaches the hands of those who need it most.

41

Community Gardens and Food Production

22

Community gardens have become a vital aspect of Sustainable Renton's mission to promote sustainability and address food insecurity. In a recent interview with the organization's leaders, Steve Randolph, President, and Hannah Flory, Vice-President, we gained valuable insights into their community garden network and the positive impact it has had on the local community.

One significant collaboration that Steve highlighted was with Celebration Church. The church generously provided Sustainable Renton with a section of their back lot, which, due to being designated as wetlands, could not be developed. This previously vacant lot was transformed into a thriving community garden. Steve described how they tilled the ground, which was once an old horse manure dumping site, revealing nutrient-rich soil ideal for cultivating a variety of crops.

With careful planning and hard work, Sustainable Renton has successfully established 42 plots, each measuring 10 by 20 feet. Furthermore, they have exciting plans to expand their garden network by adding a new 40 by 160-foot plot, incorporating a food forest into the landscape. The addition of a food forest will not only enhance the garden's beauty but also provide a sustainable source of fresh produce for the community.

The community garden initiative aims to address the needs of individuals living in apartments or other housing situations that do not allow for personal gardening space. These individuals have the opportunity to purchase a plot and experience the joy of growing their own food. Additionally, the garden serves a larger purpose by growing food for Sustainable Renton's free grocery store, ensuring that those facing food insecurity have access to fresh and healthy produce.

Steve also shared a heartwarming aspect of their previous endeavors, which involved growing food for local senior centers. In the past, they implemented a pay-what-you-can program, enabling seniors to take home fresh produce regardless of their financial situation. This initiative exemplifies Sustainable Renton's commitment to fostering community support and inclusivity.

The impending addition of a food forest not only symbolizes Sustainable Renton's dedication to sustainability but also presents an opportunity for the public to enjoy the abundance of nature. Visitors will have the privilege of picking their own fruits directly from the food forest, providing a delightful experience for all.

11

Hannah emphasized the fruitful partnership with Celebration Church, expressing her gratitude for their generosity and support. This collaboration has been instrumental in the success of Sustainable Renton's community garden network, allowing them to create a beautiful and productive space for the benefit of the community.

Storage and Future Plans

61

I also had the opportunity to discuss the challenges they face in achieving their goals as a company. One of the biggest hurdles they mentioned was funding. Over the past two years, the impact of COVID-19 has presented significant obstacles, requiring the organization to play catch-up with the rapid changes brought by the pandemic. Despite the challenges, Sustainable Renton has witnessed a growing community eager to take advantage of their services, which they wholeheartedly embrace.

Hannah expressed the importance of securing consistent funding to sustain and further develop their initiatives. While the organization has made considerable progress in stabilizing its operations, having a reliable stream of funding is crucial to their long-term success. In addition to funding, Sustainable Renton has been actively searching for a dedicated building space, an endeavor that has been ongoing for quite some time. They envision a stable building that will serve as their headquarters, allowing them to expand their services and reach more people within the community.

Fortunately, St. Matthew's Lutheran Church has been an invaluable partner to Sustainable Renton, offering their parking lot for the organization's activities for the past three years. Steve revealed that they will now be utilizing the church's back parking lot as well, emphasizing the generous support they have received. However, having their own building is a paramount goal for Sustainable Renton. They believe that with a dedicated space, their organization could grow exponentially, multiplying its impact and fostering an even stronger sense of community.

65

Volunteering and Support

We also delved into the various ways individuals can contribute to the organization's noble mission. Sustainable Renton is a community-driven initiative dedicated to providing essential resources and support to families in need. If you're wondering how you can make a difference, here's your guide to volunteering and supporting this impactful cause:

Sustainable Renton primarily relies on shelf-stable items to assist families in their journey towards self-sufficiency. Products such as oil, flour, cleaning supplies like laundry soap, and a wide range of hygiene products are always in high demand. By contributing these essential items, you play a crucial role in helping families meet their basic needs.

Sustainable Renton partners with Babies of Homelessness, ensuring a steady supply of diapers for families. Additionally, through their collaboration with the Seattle Humane Society, they receive regular donations of dog food and cat food. This support eases the burden of not only feeding families but also caring for their beloved pets.

Staying connected with Sustainable Renton is as easy as following them on social media platforms. By doing so, you can receive updates on their activities, events, and initiatives. Additionally, joining their mailing list keeps you informed about their ongoing efforts to create a sustainable and supportive community.

Sustainable Renton offers a convenient way to support their work through monthly donations. Whether it's a small contribution of five or ten dollars, these regular donations ensure a consistent flow of resources, enabling the organization to make a lasting impact on the lives of families in need. Visit their website to make a one-time donation or set up a monthly giving plan.

Sustainable Renton is actively seeking leaders and subject matter experts to join their board. If you have a passion for making a difference and possess valuable skills, consider becoming a part of their team. Your expertise will play a vital role in shaping the organization's future and driving positive change within the community.

Sustainable Renton organizes exciting events throughout the year to raise funds and awareness. One such event is "The Hunger Heroes 5K," a superhero-themed fun run, walk, and roll. Scheduled to take place at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church on July 8th, this event promises a memorable experience for a great cause. Stay tuned to their Facebook page and keep an eye out for posters announcing their upcoming fundraisers.

Sustainable Renton owes much of its success to the dedicated volunteers who show up every Monday, rain or shine. These passionate individuals contribute their time and effort to help the community thrive. The organization has recently transitioned to semi-permanent containers, providing a reliable space for the 30 to 70 volunteers who come together to make a difference. The unwavering support from the community fuels Sustainable Renton's impact.

Final Thoughts

In closing, my interview with Steve Randolph and Hannah Flory from Sustainable Renton has left me deeply inspired by their impactful work and unwavering dedication to creating a sustainable and just community. Their commitment to addressing food insecurity, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering a sense of belonging is truly commendable.

It is crucial that we rally behind organizations like Sustainable Renton, which are working tirelessly to create positive change at the grassroots level. Whether through volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness about their initiatives, we can all play a part in supporting Sustainable Renton's mission.

Opening a successful restaurant requires a combination of passion, entrepreneurial spirit, and a keen understanding of the local culinary scene. For Yovani and Hector Hernandez, brothers and business partners, their journey began a decade ago with the launch of Pizza Dudes. Recently, they expanded their horizons by venturing into a new realm with Taco Dudes & Caribbean. In another exciting edition of Renton Community Spotlight, the brothers shed light on their culinary endeavors and the motivation behind their expansion.

The Beginning of a Culinary Adventure

Brothers Yovani and Hector Hernandez embarked on a mission 10 years ago when they opened Pizza Dudes in Renton, Washington. Instead of pursuing college, their father proposed the idea of starting a business together. At the time, Yovani had aspirations of becoming a mechanic, while his brother Hector had an interest in auto shop. Embracing the opportunity to be their own bosses, they embarked on the journey that would shape their future.

Untitled design (7)

With a shared passion for pizza and a desire to offer a unique dining experience, the brothers dove headfirst into the world of entrepreneurship.

A Passion for Pizza

When I asked about their initial choice to open a pizza place, Yovani explains, "Everybody loves pizza." It's a sentiment shared by many, except for the occasional outlier like one of my friends or my son, who don't quite share the same enthusiasm. However, for Yovani and Hector, pizza was a clear choice. They aimed to bring a homemade touch to their pizzas, focusing on using fresh, quality ingredients. From making their own sausage and beef to carefully selecting the toppings, Pizza Dudes became known for its distinctive flavor and attention to detail.

Over the course of 10 years, Pizza Dudes has experienced its fair share of ups and downs, but the Hernandez brothers have weathered the storms and remained steadfast in their commitment to serving delicious pizzas to the Renton community. With their success firmly established, they decided to expand their culinary endeavors and open Taco Dudes & Caribbean just a year and a half ago.

Taco Dudes & Caribbean: A New Adventure

When questioned about the driving force behind launching their taco venture, Hector confidently states, "Renton needs a good taco place." And they were determined to fill that gap. Much like in Pizza Dudes, the brothers bring their homemade touch to Taco Dudes & Caribbean. They strive to create everything from scratch, ensuring that each dish is made with love and care. Hello, beauties! Tanya Barrans here, and I'm back with another exciting interview featuring a remarkable small business in Renton, WA. Today, I had the pleasure of chatting with Tiffany Penton, the talented and passionate owner of Sweet p Beauty. Tiffany graciously shared her journey, the story behind Sweet P Beauty, and her unwavering dedication to making people feel their best. Join me as we dive into the world of beauty and learn more about Tiffany's inspiring venture.

Discovering the Sweet p Beauty Journey

As I sat down for a delightful virtual chat with Tiffany, I was eager to learn more about the origins of Sweet p Beauty. Tiffany explained that Sweet p Beauty first blossomed in 2014, initially operating within the Euro Institute of Skincare in Renton. However, as fate would have it, the opportunity for a storefront emerged when their previous space was needed by the Euro Institute. Tiffany shared, "That was not my original intention to have brick and mortar anything. I just wanted a small place to do my thing, but it's grown, and I'm so, so happy and grateful that it has."

Tiffany's journey in the beauty industry began back in 2007 when she joined Mac Cosmetics. After gaining experience and finding her passion for bridal makeup, she realized the challenge of booking weddings due to conflicting schedules. This led her to explore other avenues and eventually pursue a career as an esthetician, earning her Master Esthetician license. With her license in hand, Tiffany established Sweet p Beauty as more than just "makeup by Tiffany." It expanded to include lash extensions, skincare, hair removal, and the wonderful world of bridal beauty.

A Passion for Making Others Feel Beautiful

During our conversation, I couldn't help but notice Tiffany's deep love for her craft. When asked about her career choice, she confessed, "It just randomly happened. I actually just wanted to work at Nordstrom and wanted a discount there, and Mac Cosmetics called me." She continued, "I found this love for making someone feel really good and not having to pack it all on. There's no rules in makeup." Tiffany takes pride in showing clients alternative ways to enhance their natural beauty, allowing them to feel like the best version of themselves.

Makeup Magic and More

Tiffany's passion for makeup continues to be the driving force behind Sweet p Beauty. She shared, "Doing lashes is what I could pack my schedule with full-time, but I think where my heart truly, truly is, is makeup." She effortlessly creates stunning makeup looks that leave her clients feeling confident and beautiful. From lash extensions to lash lifts, Sweet P Beauty offers a range of services to enhance your natural features and achieve that instant gratification we all crave.

At Sweet p Beauty, their goal is to make mornings easy and be your one-stop shop for all things beauty. Whether you're seeking lash extensions, facials, or professional makeup services, they have you covered. Tiffany emphasized, "You come in looking one way and you leave looking another." Building Lasting Connections

One aspect that truly sets Sweet p Beauty apart is the personal connection Tiffany and her team cultivate with their clients. She shared heartwarming stories of friendship and support that have blossomed from professional relationships. She explained, "Some of my closest friends are clients that turned into friends, and I love that. That's my favorite part of Sweet p." Tiffany believes that clients often become friends faster than friends become clients, highlighting the deep bonds that form within the beauty industry. She recounted instances where she cried with clients, exchanged texts long after the service, and celebrated life milestones together. At Sweet p Beauty, the focus is not only on providing exceptional service but also on building trust and genuine connections with every client.

Meet Emily, the Owner of Esme' and Elodie in Renton WA

A Boutique that Brings Life and Color to the Pacific Northwest

Esme' and Elodie is a unique boutique located in the heart of Downtown Renton. With its bright and colorful interior, the store stands out from the typical gray and gloomy Pacific Northwest weather. I recently sat down with Emily Brooker, the owner of Esme' and Elodie, to learn more about her story and the inspiration behind her boutique.

Emily started Esme'and Elodie in 2017 as an online boutique. As a plus-size woman, she often struggled to find clothes that fit her well in local stores. Frustrated with the limited options available, she decided to start her own online boutique to cater to other women like herself. The online store was a success, but after a couple of years, Emily was ready for something more. She wanted to offer her customers a more personalized shopping experience, with the opportunity to try on clothes and see them in person. That's when she decided to open a physical store.

Emily stumbled upon the space while grabbing coffee at Boon Boona Coffee and saw the "For Lease" sign on the storefront. She knew that was the direction she wanted to take her business and decided to open her own brick-and-mortar store.

Emily admits that opening a store during the pandemic was the opposite of what most people were doing. Everyone was shopping online, and many were starting their online boutiques. However, Emily wanted to do the opposite, and she believes that doing so helped her find her people.

When I asked Emily about her style take, she revealed that her fashion choices are inspired by her love for color and pattern. She wanted a store that would make her happy and bring a smile to her face, so she filled Esme' and Elodie with tons of color and a boho vibe. Emily's colorful store is a refreshing contrast to the gray, dreary weather we experience in the Pacific Northwest.

Esme' and Elodie isn't just a clothing store - there are also a lot of fun and cool things to find there. Emily's boutique has evolved to include sex toys, paraphernalia, and size-inclusive lingerie. Emily realized that the store was more than just clothing and accessories - it was about offering a holistic shopping experience that made customers feel good about themselves.

Esme' and Elodie has become a beloved fixture in the Renton community. Emily has developed relationships with other local business owners, including Jen at Urban Sprouts, Richelle at Sparkle Renton, Holly at The Pencil Test, and Tawnee at Wyldwood Creative. She believes that supporting other local businesses is essential for building a strong and vibrant community.

Esme' and Elodie is more than just a store - it's a vibrant and welcoming community space where people can come together and express themselves. Emily's passion for making people feel confident and comfortable in their own skin shines through in everything she does.

I loved chatting with Emily and learning more about her journey as a business owner. If you want to learn more about Esme' and Elodie and get to know Emily better, check out our full video interview above. And, if you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by Esme' and Elodie - I have a feeling you'll leave feeling inspired and empowered too!

Meet Tawnee Kinnebrew, Owner of Wyldwood Creative in Renton

A Haven for Crafting and Community in Downtown Renton

Today, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Tawnee Kinnebrew, the creative mind behind Wyldwood Creative, located in the heart of Downtown Renton. Join me as we dive into Tawnee's journey, the unique offerings of Wyldwood Creative, and the values that make this place a special haven for all craft enthusiasts.

After many attempts to schedule our meeting, Tawnee and I finally found time to chat. As I entered Wyldwood Creative, I couldn't help but appreciate the vibrant and inviting atmosphere that enveloped the space. Tawnee's warm and friendly demeanor instantly made me feel at home, ready to explore the story behind her thriving business.

Wyldwood Creative Takes Root

Tawnee shared the story behind the birth of Wyldwood Creative, which opened its doors in October 2019. Her desire to own her own business was always present, but she wasn't sure what form it would take. As a skilled creator and crafter, Tawnee saw an opportunity to share her passion with others. The idea for Wyldwood Creative was born—a place where people could embrace their creativity and learn various crafts. Initially a maker space, the business adapted during the pandemic, transitioning to online retail while continuing to offer classes. Now, as things settle down, Wyldwood Creative is back to providing in-person classes three to four days a week and offering a wide range of fabrics for sale.

A Wealth of Classes

During our conversation, I was intrigued to learn about the diverse array of classes offered at Wyldwood Creative. From beginner-level sewing and quilting to garment making and connecting with local artists, the options are endless. Tawnee emphasized their commitment to inclusivity by welcoming everyone, regardless of skill level or background. The classes range in price, with sliding scales available for some courses based on income levels. To ensure accessibility, Wyldwood Creative also offers scholarships supported by the community, providing free classes to deserving individuals.

Creating Conscious Consumers:

Tawnee and I delved into the topic of the cost of creating one's own clothes versus purchasing them from traditional retailers. She shed light on the misconception that handmade items are always cheaper. Through her insights, we explored the value of considering supply chains, craftsmanship, and personal investment. While making your own clothes may cost more initially, it fosters a deeper sense of pride and cultivates a conscious approach to consumption. By understanding the true cost of handmade items, Tawnee encourages people to cherish and maintain their creations for longer.

Sewing Machines and Longevity

Drawing parallels between sewing machines and cars, Tawnee explained that proper care and maintenance are key to ensuring their longevity. Much like servicing a car, sewing machines require attention and occasional upkeep. She recommended local businesses, such as Sewing Machine Service Co. and Bernina of Renton, for cleaning, repairs, or upgrades. By nurturing and respecting their machines, sewing enthusiasts can enjoy the benefits of using their trusted companions for years to come.

Embracing Community and Values

One of the standout aspects of Wyldwood Creative is its strong sense of community and alignment with core values. Tawnee emphasized her commitment to creating a safe and inclusive space where everyone feels welcome, irrespective of their race, religion, or sexual orientation. She shared her personal experiences in other quilt shops and her determination to challenge the status quo by fostering an environment that encourages creativity and provides support. Additionally, Wyldwood Creative actively supports the Duwamish tribe by paying monthly rent that goes directly toward the sustenance and preservation of their culture. Tawnee's dedication to social responsibility extends beyond her business, reflecting her deep-rooted values and desire to make a positive impact on the community.

Creating an Inclusive Sewing Space

As I entered Tawnee's sewing and craft store in downtown Renton, I could immediately sense that this was no ordinary quilt shop. Tawnee shared her vision of creating a safe and inclusive space where people from all backgrounds and skill levels could come together to explore their love for sewing and crafting. It was inspiring to hear how her efforts had touched the lives of those who had previously felt excluded or lacked confidence in their creative abilities. Through her welcoming environment, Tawnee has truly transformed the way people perceive the sewing world.

A Unique Approach to Retail

Tawnee's shop defies the traditional image of a quilt store. Instead, it offers a curated selection of products that align with her values and supports small businesses within the community. Tawnee's shop is not limited to sewing supplies; it offers an array of unique gifts and products that appeal to a wide range of interests. From fabrics to candles, coloring books to puzzles, every item in the store has been thoughtfully chosen to provide customers with a diverse and delightful shopping experience. By stepping through the doors of Tawnee's store, visitors can uncover a hidden gem within downtown Renton. It's a place where creativity and community intersect, and where unexpected treasures await. Tawnee's emphasis on collaboration and supporting local artisans sets her store apart from the rest and adds a unique charm to downtown Renton.

Unity in the Downtown Community

Downtown Renton is more than just a collection of businesses—it's a tight-knit community that supports and uplifts one another. Tawnee shared how the pandemic and ongoing construction projects had brought the downtown business owners closer together. They rallied around each other, recognizing that their collective success was intertwined. The sense of camaraderie and mutual support in downtown Renton is palpable, making it a truly special place to live, work, and shop.

Supporting the Renton Community

In a world saturated with online shopping, Tawnee emphasizes the power of word-of-mouth recommendations. By telling a friend about her store, we can help spread the word and support the vibrant downtown Renton community. Encouraging others to visit Tawnee's shop not only exposes them to a welcoming space but also contributes to the growth and success of local businesses. Let's come together as a community to celebrate and support the wonderful spaces that make Renton so unique.

Final Thoughts

My conversation with Tawnee Kinnebrew was truly inspiring. Wyldwood Creative is more than just a crafting store—it's a haven for creativity, community, and conscious consumption. Tawnee's commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and supporting local artists sets Wyldwood Creative apart and makes it a cherished gem in Downtown Renton. Whether you're an experienced crafter or just starting your creative journey, I highly recommend visiting Wyldwood Creative and immersing yourself in the warm and welcoming atmosphere that Tawnee has cultivated and become a part of the vibrant Renton community. Together, let's celebrate the transformative power of embracing diversity and uplifting one another!
